STUDY IN YZU: Global academic partnership will bridge the skill gap in semiconductor sector

Yuan Ze University has been collaborating with several Indian universities to strengthen the exchange of students and internship opportunities.

Yuan Ze University in Taoyuan City along with Taiwan’s semiconductor company Delta Electronics are creating a strong industry-academia bond through its unique programme that aims to develop future technology leaders. The collaboration will help in the expansion of semiconductor skill sets in India and Taiwan. The University is reaching out to Indian universities to train students in emerging technologies. The collaboration will help students to explore diverse learning opportunities, including corporate visits, internships, and research projects while gaining cross-border collaboration experience and exposure to corporate culture.

Last year, the University connected with Sastra University to introduce an initiative to select 10 top-tier master’s students. "The students will be specialising in Artificial Intelligence (AI), robotics, and data science, for a one-year intensive study at Yuan Ze University’s College of Electrical and Communication Engineering. The programme focuses on the practical application of intelligent automation technologies, bridging the gap between academic knowledge and industry needs,” says Yun Chia Liang, vice president, International Affairs at Yuan Ze University.

The collaborative association will allow students to complete the first year of the master's programme at their Indian university, while they can finish the second year at Yuan Ze University. “This initiative will help students explore exciting job opportunities in Delta India and several Taiwanese and US semiconductor companies after completing the course successfully. After gaining expertise, students can also help in strengthening the fast-growing semiconductor sector in Taiwan or India,” adds Yun Chia Liang.

In their earlier stint, Yuan Ze University hosted 10 Indian students from Sastra University, and the process of connecting with other universities is underway. “To strengthen the collaboration, we are supporting the exchange of students. The global focus has shifted to semiconductor production largely because of increasing industrial demand. Our university has been working on customising the courses as per the demand so that the students are job-ready,” says Liang.  In the past two years, we have had many Indian students coming to our campus as TEEP (Taiwan Education Experience Program, supported by the Ministry of Education) or IIPP (International Internship Pilot Program, supported by the National Science and Technology Council) students. We have partnered with VIT, Chandigarh University, Vel Tech, Presidency University, etc allowing TEEP and IIPP students to join the laboratories to learn and conduct research," he adds.

India has emerged as one of the top countries to send its students to Taiwan for higher education. Several students/researchers after completing their course find a job in the local tech companies specialising in semiconductors, AI and IoT. Taiwan has a thriving startup ecosystem which is on the lookout for a talented workforce. “Indian students have a strong inclination for Computer Science Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering. Students and researchers keen to explore a new country and acquire a working knowledge of Mandarin have a smooth stay in Taiwan. We do not expect international students to master the language but an ability to converse with the local population helps in a comfortable stay,” adds Liang.
